In 2017, a German publishing company asked me to contribute a thorough introduction to a reprint edition of Jean-Claude Pressac’s 1989 book of the same title. Unfortunately, this German publisher went out of business in late 2018, so no such reprint ever appeared. My introduction is still valuable, though; hence I published it in January 2019.

Pressac’s 1989 oversize book of the same title was a trail blazer, as its many reproductions of documents from the Ausch­witz Museum’s archives made them accessible for the first time to the general public. The book is still valuable today, but after decades of additional research, Pressac’s annotations are outdated. This book summarizes the most pertinent research results on Auschwitz gained during the past 30 years. With many references to Pressac’s epic tome, it serves as an update and correction to it, whether you own an original hard copy of it, read it online, borrow it from a library, purchase a reprint, or are just interested in such a summary in general.
